"Le Faune dansant" depicts a young faun dancing on a sack of wine, playing a flute which he holds in his right hand. Raising his left arm and his right leg, you can see the energy in his movements. Eugène Louis Lequesne was inspired by a statue of a dancing faun found in Pompei and exhibited at Naples. A faun is known as a Romanmythical rustic god associated with forests and enchanted woods, and has inspired many artists over the years to produce statues in a variety of forms.

Artist

Eugène-Louis Lequesne (or Le Quesne) (1815-1887) was a French sculptor. In 1843, he won the second Prix de Rome, and in 1844 the first prize, with a plaster bas-relief entitled Pyrrhus tuant Priam (Pyrrhus killing Priam).
