La Danse
La Danse

It was one of four sculptural groups made from Echaillon marble that decorate the façade of the Opera Garnier in Paris, two to either side of the entrance at ground level. When installed in 1869, and widely criticised as obscene. The work is noted for its dynamic composition and the sensual expressiveness of the figures, which Carpeaux modeled with great skill and sensitivity. "La Danse" is considered a key work in the development of French modernism, and continues to be highly regarded and widely studied by art historians and sculptors alike.
