"La Bacchante" depicts a female follower of the god Bacchus, who was the ancient Roman god of wine and fertility. It was not so much for depth of emotion that artists, like Carrier-Belleuse, turned to antiquity, but more as a pretext for portraying the nude which they sought to make assensual as possible.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse(1824-1887) was a French sculptor. He was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was made an officer of the Legion of Honour.
His name is perhaps best known because Auguste Rodin worked as his assistant between 1864 and 1870
