Chasseurs d'aigles was commissioned by the state under the title "The Human Races" for one of the facades (rue Buffon) of the Natural History Museum of Paris. The artist takes us several thousand years back, to prehistoric times… He imagines a hunting scene in which men fight eagles. At the time of Coutan, the fierce struggles between men and beasts fascinate the public, because these fights depict the primitive instincts of our ancestors.

Artist

Jules-Félix Coutan (1848-1939) was a French sculptor and educator. Coutan was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872. Later he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1900, where he expressed his disdain for the researches of Rodin and the Impressionist sculptors who followed him. He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905. Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
