"Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi"(Fountain of the Four Rivers) is a fountain in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy.
The four giant nudes that form the statue are the personification of the principal rivers of the continents known at the time: the Nile represents Africa, with its veiled head because the source of the river had yet to be discovered, the Ganges Asia, the Danube Europe and Rio de la Plata, the Americas. he Ganges carries a long oar, representing the river's navigability. The Nile's head is draped with a loose piece of cloth, meaning that no one at that time knew exactly where the Nile's source was. And the Río de la Plata is sitting on a pile of coins, a symbol of the riches America could offer to Europe.
