Allegorical statue called "La Nuit", which in English translates to "The Night", is one of four statues that were sculpted to depict different times of the day, and all were executed by different artists. Sculpted by Charles Alphonse Achille Gumery, this commission was started back in the late 1860s after the new gardens were laid out, however, it was actually completed by Jules Thomas after the original artists death.

Artist

Charles-Alphonse-Achille Guméry (1827-1871) was a French sculptor working in an academic realist manner in Paris. Several of his figures ornament the Opéra Garnier most notoriously the group La Danse, which was commissioned from him after the group by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was found unacceptable.
