The statue is an anamorphosis and offers two different appearances depending on our point of view: if we are on its left, it presents a smiling face (but it is only a mask) which hides the reversed figure, the real one figure that we discover by moving to its right. Baudelaire, inspired by the plaster of this statue, turned it into a poem "Le Masque"!
