The Young Tarentine is a marble statue from 1871 by the French sculptor Alexandre Schoenewerk (1820-1885). It is based on a poem by André Chénier. Presented at the 1872 Salon, this work was immediately acquired by the Living Artists Purchasing Service. Attributed in 1874 to the National Museums, it was then exhibited at the Luxembourg Museumand then at the Louvre Museum from 1876. It was then deposited in the National Museum of the Compiègne castle from 1881 to 1986. It has since been present in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay.


Pierre Alexandre Schoenewerk (1820-1885), or Alexandre Schoenewerk, was a French sculptor. He was a student of David d'Angers, and was named a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 1873.
